Selfie, eye contact

That was unpleasant though, got all lightheaded afterwards and had to have a lie down.

Selfie, eye contact

It me, all boosted up! 🎉

I think my favourite thing about Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team is that you you can dip your toes into ALL the factions without having to spend an arm and a leg making a full army (plus the subsequent time expenditure of painting them). It's pretty much, "Buy a couple of boxes of the basic troops and bam, you've got a squad."

"The trans Pride flag has been planted on the peak of Antarctica’s highest mountain, Vinson Massif, by trans climber Erin Parisi.

Dedicating her achievement to 'the resilience of the trans community' that 'took me in when I had no hope', Parisi said trans people 'showed me that it’s better to be visible and free, than live in self-imposed exile, and that stigma withers when we visibly embrace our truth'"

I played a game of Fireteam against myself tonight, just to get a hang of the rules. I really like it! It's pretty straightforwards and nice and fast-paced.

The concept of talent as a god-given blessing is inherently wrong. It actively hinders people to try new stuff and suck at it at first.

Because that is what you'll do when you try new things: you will suck. For some time. Yes, some will learn faster than others, experiences differ! But if you want to learn something new, please don't think you need any kind of talent for that.

What you need is passion. And time.

And the courage to fail.

(I should point out that I didn't actually paint all of that as fast as it seems from the time between those two toots. 😛 I posted the first image to my website last night, but I didn't notice that it hadn't posted to Mastodon until just earlier today).

Miniature painting, gore

Oh man, this blood effect paint (called appropriately enough "Blood for the Blood God") is amazing/horrific.

For the first time since May of last year, I've actually fully completed a painting project! This is the Warhammer Underworlds warband The Grymwatch, they're a band of ghouls who are completely insane and think they're a noble band of knights but they're actually just, well, flesh-eating ghouls.

(Technically they're not actually fully completed quite yet, I still need to varnish them and then apply blood effects, but that's going to have to wait until it's a) not above 25˚C and b) not humid).

I wrote a blog post three years ago today (blog.virtualwolf.org/finally-s) that I was finally doing some painting and included a photo of my setup then, which was just the table in the back room with a whole ton of paints and miniatures and tools scattered haphazardly across it, haha. Significantly neater now!

Doing some reinforcing on my painting table this morning. The original solution of Liquid Nails and some small actual nails wasn't holding up in places (I have no idea why I didn't just use screws to begin with, but anyway, it's definitely rock-solid now).

Of course Google's properties are all crawlable (so they can be listed on Google), but you can imagine that if Reddit closes its doors and TikTok displaces YouTube, then… what's left? Wikipedia? And a sea of SEO spam?

Of course there are also a bunch of old-timers like me who still have an old-fashioned blog (I say "old-timer," although I'm in my 30s), but people aren't going to want to hear from old-timers forever. If the good stuff is on Insta/TikTok/etc then people will search there.

This HN thread captures some of my despair over the direction the web is heading: news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2

"I also don't think that people are creating websites anymore? Where is there supposed to be info for the search engine to crawl? All real user content is on reddit, instagram, twitter and youtube."

"[The WWW] is rapidly becoming a defunct protocol, the culmination of a decades-long shift in the Internet's center of mass away from browsers and towards centralized and commercialized apps."

I hope you start doing the thing. 🤍

I’ve been going through the links on the web0 manifesto and seeing your lovely personal sites and reading about your projects and it has made me feel less lonely and more hopeful.

So I just wanted to say thank you! 💕

Honking your car horn is a foolproof way of immediately communicating two clear concepts to your intended audience:

1) You have a car horn
2) You are honking it

Oh man, I've not laughed this hard in a while. 😂
