Anyone out there know computer internals? I have a Dell power supply with an 8 pin socket marked “VGA”, I have a GPU with an 8 pin PCIe power socket. I want to plug A into B. Calling the computer store to see if they had a appropriate cable I was told “oooh no, can’t sell you one of those, you need to get the exact right cable for the power supply brand”. Is this true? Are 8-pin cables not just 8-pin cables? Where do I find the right cable?

I save up for a really nice pair of noise-cancelling headphones so I could have some peace and quite in the office.

This has had the effect that now when my boss wants my attention, he comes up really really close to me and yells.

@Kels_316 talking to an army bloke - “everyone always wants our help in an emergency but nobody ever tells us how we did 😟”

This morning I am at a disaster risk assessment workshop where a bunch of experts have been summoned to play out a major bushfire scenario in Tasmania. Lots of people in uniforms here, of all colours.

Just saying maybe the Open Geospatial Consortium needs to think about hiring John Carmack.

Computer capable of rasterising approximately a zillion polygons per second when playing games, takes four hours to rasterize my GIS polygon data to a GeoTIFF, and that’s with about a week of me fucking around optimising every damn thing.

WAIT I forgot an important step! Before you add the rice, stir through like a desert spoon of flour through the vegetables and mushrooms.

I guess if you were on a stove you would just boil the shit out of this for an hour or so. In the pressure cooker I just put it on the soup cycle which is about 30 minutes. Now the trick is, after it’s finished cooking, pour in 1/2 cup of milk and stir it through. Makes it amazing.

Add in a litre of stock. Doesn’t matter. I’ve tried beef, chicken and vegetable stock and honestly it’s all good. Add a litre of water too. The mushrooms and rice will soak up the liquid and make it thick so add plenty so it’s well covered.

Once that’s done add in like a cup and a half I guess of brown rice? I use this brown rice + quinoa stuff because it’s nice. Stir about for a minute.

As promised, mushroom and brown rice soup recipe. Now I do this in a pressure cooker but on the stove is fine. Whatever. 2 carrots, 1 large onion, 3 cloves of garlic, 3 stalks of celery, about a bag (400g?) mushrooms, sauté that in some olive oil until nice and soft. Add some pepper, parsley, paprika and couple of sticks of rosemary.

Our car, which is a plug-in hybrid, is being repaired after some tosser ran into the back of it, so I have a hire car. I’m here sitting in it with it idling and it suddenly occurred to me - oh shit, you can’t just sit in these bastards with the engine on, they actually use petrol while going nowhere. Dumb things.

Most interesting email address I've ever interacted with at work; someone by the name of "Paul Keating" at the MUA...

@BDA For room ambience I found this great set of impulses (Samplecity Bricasti M7 Impulse library), unfortunately now only available via the Wayback Machine, but worth downloading while you can. web.archive.org/web/2019020121

By way of obvious demonstration; first half of this recording is with a Gods Cab impulse loaded, second half of the recording is the exact same recording but without it turned on and sounds shocking.
