All Quiet on the Western Front (the film) was banned in Melbourne between 1930 and 1941. The book was banned all over Australia. A contemporary newspaper article describes it as “officialdom gone mad”.

that's the beauty of physical labor for yourself. you can harvest vegetables or chop wood, and while being useful and productive physically, your mind is free to grow. to explore and to evolve. to live.
I need a forest and a big garden and a wood heater.

1/2: when you work a job that requires physical effort rather than mental effort, you win. because you can think what you want, come up with ideas that really interest you, and you are being paid for this. if you are being paid for your mental fortitude, you have no thought freedom, no mental freedom, and you can't simply think what you want when you want.
but maybe you really win, if you love what you are being paid to do.

There is now a Mastodon instance for publishing scientists: FediScience.

Everyone is welcome from PhD student to professor, as well as researchers from outside of academia. You are welcome to stay afterwards, but it is also easy to change to another server.

There will be a lot of science talk on this server, but there is no need to only talk science

Boosts are appreciated to let others know about this new instance.

Stop mirroring your Twitter account to the fediverse, especially these retweets of a single picture without any caption or comment.

We used to say the Web had shrunk to four websites where people posted only screenshots from the other three, let's not add a fifth one to that dumpster fire.

I know drought threatens an entire livelihood/way of life, but isn't drilling for already precious groundwater simply making the situation far worse? :/ It's a short-sighted solution and definitely won't help us change for the better.

Someone said "is that still a thing?" when I announced I was on Mastodon. Is it?
Boost this so we actually get a few votes maybe? How far can it go?

If a PCR test has a specificity of 96%, this means if you test 100 people of which zero actually have covid, you will get 4 (4%) false positve results.

Test 10,000 people and you get 400 false positives.

Is this being talked about at all in Australia as a potential source of all these new 'infections'?

I am interested to hear anybody's thoughts on this.

Hi friends!
I'm Jim. I'm approaching 40 and been living in Germany for the last few years, but I've got no desire to lose touch with Australia.
I think I've had enough of FB so here I am.
It's a dream for me that when this life is over, I want to be able to look back and know that I lived the life that I was supposed to live, not a life that I was paid to live.
I particularly enjoy (barefoot) running.
If you think we'd get along, don't hesitate to make contact!
