SARS-CoV-2 variants, nerdery 

I wondered what led to a variant getting the name it does (e.g., “B1.1.7”). I thought it might be related to where on the genome the mutation had occurred. Nope, it’s just assigned the next highest number, and if it’s obviously derived from a parent variant then another dot and number gets added. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/
