Home network hosting #SysadminLife

I’ve self-hosted email at home for the last eight years but I think it’s time to pay a professional to do it. Reasons:
• My non-technical partner can continue to have email if I am hit by a bus.
• Being a sysadmin at home is too much like my day job.
• It was time to upgrade the hardware anyway so maybe I can upgrade it away entirely.

Going with Fastmail, there’s no contest.

Am going to semi-liveblog migrating to Fastmail.

What I’ve done so far:
• Signed up with new_username at Fastmail dot com. Not actually going to use this address for anything except to log into their systems.
• Added a domain I have hosted elsewhere (Hover).
• Guided through setting MX and other DNS records in Hover. These are generic but it’s easy to edit them in the Hover web UI.

With that I can send email from my work account to this domain, and from this domain to my work account. SPF and DKIM Just Worked.

Fastmail is now importing all my existing mail from my self-hosted IMAP server. Just need port number, TLS on, user name and password. This is very, very easy.

Migration's done. Shit, that was easy.

Adding the account to my local computer's mail client is a matter of logging into Fastmail's web interface and creating a per-device password for the client. Thunderbird automatically gets the correct IMAP and SMTP settings.

One-time password integration is slick. Works really well with 1Password: as soon as I log into the web interface, 1Password has generated the one-time password and already put in in the clipboard.

It was fun* writing Rules for the 36 different mailing lists I’m on.

@futzle This is one of the reasons I'm loathe to change my mail hosting setup. I have a LOT of procmail rules on the home server.
