A group of developers is called a merge conflict 👩‍💻

This is why you should read The Guardian - an excellent take on last night's "debate" by Katharine Murphy. Her writing had me in stitches and then I realised what's at stake and felt very sad.

@JacksonBates That's a fair assertion. I think it derives from the fact that you have much more control over your timeline here than that other place. If you rarely use the federated timeline and stick to your feed and local timeline it will be a much more self-curated experience, no algorithm involved.

@mike I'm in the same boat, but in the end I had to re-create my FB account because it's the only platform my son's basketball club uses to communicate and I didn't want him to miss out. It's really frustrating and disappointing.

My quiet protest is that my FB profile photo, banner photo and timeline are full of information. facebook.com/guru.meditation.1

Being someone who refuses to engage with any Facebook products on ethical grounds is like trying to live as a vegetarian when all your friends refuse to meet anywhere other than one specific steakhouse.

@jalefkowit I went through the same struggle when moving to Rails 6, and in the end just went with the hive mind rather than swimming against the current.

Recurring offer reminder: I'll help / mentor / teach / tutor / troubleshoot with anyone who wants to learn git for basic version control, collaboration, managing personal projects, or for a day job. I'll work to connect people with mentors other than me if they prefer - no need to explain why.

Same for bash, command line tools, and so on.

I want using & contributing to FS/OSS to be easier for way more people.

Boosts appreciated!!

Web development in 2022 is 5% actual web development and 95% wrestling with npm and webpack

Can anyone recommend a good NBN router for the home that does *not* have a wireless router in it?

I'm looking for a simple modem that plugs into the NBN port and then has at least one ethernet port, and that's all.

I'm thinking the Vigor130 or Billion BiPAC 8900X but both of these are pretty old chipsets.

@yacc143 @dajbelshaw @tekphloyd @paulrbr @jalefkowit I can see a workable solution for that too.

Assuming a user moves from bob@instance1.social to bobby@instance2.social -- both instance1 and instance2 could be considered authorities on that move - they can both guarantee the move happened.

If on instance3 there is an archive of timeline involving bob@instance1 and somebody clicks on the user's profile to get more info, that would connect with instance1 and trigger an update of instance3's database to change all the references to bob@instance1.

If, on instance3, nobody ever clicks on bob@instance1 to get more info then it would never be updated, but that's no different to how it is now (and nobody is clicking on it, so nobody cares anyway).

@dajbelshaw @tekphloyd @paulrbr @jalefkowit I expect that this is technically possible but is currently written as:

raise NotImplementedError

@dajbelshaw @tekphloyd @paulrbr @jalefkowit yeah but the two servers talk to each other already for the purposes of migration -- you initiate it on the destination and finalise it on the source, so I would've expected it could be done as part of that?

@jalefkowit @paulrbr @dajbelshaw I think I need to see this in practice to understand it properly and get the visual for exactly how it looks.

@jalefkowit @paulrbr @dajbelshaw losing all your post history seems to make the feature kinda pointless? I guess I'm missing something.

Is there any kind of universal identifier feature? Like if I change from @Stewart to @SMJ@other.social, how are people supposed to know that's me?

@mike I hear you - I regularly get reply emails to "Stuart" even though it says "Stewart" in my email address and signature.

I once worked with a Polish guy Wojciech Kuczborski and I would be at pains to spell his name correctly in emails, and he would still refer to me as Stuart. 😠

Also most of Asia and the subcontinent refers to me as Steward.

@dajbelshaw @jalefkowit do you lose anything when moving between instances? Is anything left behind in the old instance?
