having a crack installing redhat 8 on my macbook pro for funsies

I assumed wifi wouldn’t work and I think I was right

well that wouldn't boot because i installed that via legacy mode, and now I'm in a hole because @RedHat@twitter.com don't ship mac efi tools by design. thanks a bunch. attempting workaround from this thread bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.c

Aaand the workaround now fails, and further in another thread a yum update breaks everything. Guess red hat is out the window. Hello Ubuntu I suppose.

forums.centos.org/viewtopic.ph for reference for me later - this is where it also breaks after workaround, so not worth it

whoops, forgot about fedora. that has a apple livecd function so... good indicator. getfedora.org/en/workstation/d

then I found out the webcam wouldn't work, which turns out can only be enabled through installing an experimental driver that *extracts firmware from osx to even make it work* github.com/patjak/bcwc_pcie/wi

also weirdly i get rEFInd to boot osx if i do nothing on boot, and i think a grub loader if i hold option

completely weird, but it works.

I started this at about 11 hours ago. considered functional about 10 minutes ago.
So, I have had a real... linux experience today. whee.

I also forgot - I installed a package... to get cpu/gpu fans working. i didn't notice any fans beforehand but i'm not sure. this thread is my version of documentation btw :P github.com/linux-on-mac/mbpfan

also, had to disable sleep completely because it fucks up in a magnificent way. sssd_kcm.log goes read only and borks everything. unix.stackexchange.com/questio

I am booting the entire os off an SD card slot which is rad (but i want to keep my os x install :) ) - i think it has something to do with it tho, because arch linux documents some trouble with this. wiki.archlinux.org/title/MacBo but it looks like the module mine uses is xhci_plat_hcd

@Posty oh noes, this reminds me of when i first tried to install linux on my toshiba laptop years ago, i didn't know the fans weren't working and before i could fix it, the motherboard had fried itself. Not a good start!
