I assumed wifi wouldn’t work and I think I was right
well that wouldn't boot because i installed that via legacy mode, and now I'm in a hole because @RedHat@twitter.com don't ship mac efi tools by design. thanks a bunch. attempting workaround from this thread https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1751311
https://forums.centos.org/viewtopic.php?t=71821 for reference for me later - this is where it also breaks after workaround, so not worth it
whoops, forgot about fedora. that has a apple livecd function so... good indicator. https://getfedora.org/en/workstation/download/
well, lets see - I had to add rpmfusion repositories to even get my fucking wifi to work https://gist.github.com/jamespamplin/7a803fd5be61d4f93e0c5dcdea3f99ee
then I found out the webcam wouldn't work, which turns out can only be enabled through installing an experimental driver that *extracts firmware from osx to even make it work* https://github.com/patjak/bcwc_pcie/wiki/Get-Started#firmware-extraction
I also forgot - I installed a package... to get cpu/gpu fans working. i didn't notice any fans beforehand but i'm not sure. this thread is my version of documentation btw :P https://github.com/linux-on-mac/mbpfan#fedora
also, had to disable sleep completely because it fucks up in a magnificent way. sssd_kcm.log goes read only and borks everything. https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/188559/disable-suspend-sleep-mode-completely-on-fedora-21
I am booting the entire os off an SD card slot which is rad (but i want to keep my os x install :) ) - i think it has something to do with it tho, because arch linux documents some trouble with this. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/MacBookPro11,x#SD_Card_Reader but it looks like the module mine uses is xhci_plat_hcd
@Posty oh noes, this reminds me of when i first tried to install linux on my toshiba laptop years ago, i didn't know the fans weren't working and before i could fix it, the motherboard had fried itself. Not a good start!
@Posty Respect, mate. I have one (cheap, refurbished) laptop per operating system. Had all three going today, screen shared/VNC onto the Mac Mini with the dual monitors. The EliteBook makes a very passable server.
@grumpysmiffy i kinda want to stay in the redhat surrounds so I'm currently installing fedora which has apparently no problem with os x and i kind of wish i did this hours ago, but i did kinda want to do the enterprise one first to see if i can :)
@Posty I TOTALLY get that. I'm currently tooling up for my (hopefully, please, please, please, please) new gig. OS variety isn't actually relevant, so just using my Ubuntu laptop and chucking PostrgreSQL and PostGIS on there. If this comes off, I might even be firing up the soldering iron.
